Its University, madam. You thinking about coming to the UK?
A 'college' in the UK is a system to occupy retards who dropped out of school at 16.

Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
tomato tomato bro.
we just say college here, for the most part. but yeah, i got my schools sorted yesterday. sheffield, bradford?, manchester, leeds... and i forget the other. they're uni's offering chem engineering degrees within an hour of clitheroe though. which is where i'd be staying. so yeah.

Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
come to Sheffield Hallam that's where I'm at
Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
Leeds was cool did my first year there. Booming night life, I remember the Ministry of Sound club pretty well. Plus its got 2-3 uni's there so a large student population. However a mate said that the admin at the Leeds uni got retarded, but this was a good 4 years ago.
Aberystwyth was awesome did my second year there, best student life i ever experienced. Way better than London. Its really small so its really the students that run the town, but it also means its pretty tight nit and everyone gets to know each other. However the halls of residence i was at kinda sucked balls, since the architectural plans were from a prison ,

Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
Don't quote me on this. Two main things about universities in the UK.
First, all of them have different systems. For example while i was in Aberystwyth i didn't have any minors. In Glyndwr i had the choice to do one minor a year. While a friend of mine at Lancaster had to do like 2-3 minors in his first year.
Secondly, if memory serves me right. You can change your major during your first year. But i think there is a completely different system to the original application. And i think you need to pick a major that is similar to the previous one.
Finally, I am not sure if you lose a year from this.

Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
what are you ppl studdying at universityies? what is worth going to school for to make the most $? is there even any dam jobs available..iv heard ppl coming out of uni's to get shitty jobs..and tbh i got my job right now with a high school education and i help do surgerys and BBQ...also how the hell can u guys afford to go there..rich parents or student loans?
Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
Wish i had rich perants :*(. But my first degree is loan from the government which i start to pay back after i start a job with 17k-21k pounds a year.Faint wrote: what are you ppl studdying at universityies? what is worth going to school for to make the most $? is there even any dam jobs available..iv heard ppl coming out of uni's to get shitty jobs..and tbh i got my job right now with a high school education and i help do surgerys and BBQ...also how the hell can u guys afford to go there..rich parents or student loans?
As for my current degree. I pay 300 dollars a year and the government subsidizes 3k dollars a year. Gotta love communism.
As for realisation. Depends what you got in mind and so on. Got a friend who finished physics now he's doing his PGSi (i think). The government give him a 9k pound bursary. And to top it off he starts work at 27K+ a year.
Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
scholarships will pay for mine, unless i decide to go to the UK. in which case, it'll be loans.
and it depends on what you go to school for. get a degree in something with a high demand, and you'll get a job. it's pretty simple.

Oi! My HND at college is garanteeing me 3rd year entry to Edinburgh's Napier University for Network Administration as well as Information Systems at Heriot Watt University0zzy wrote:A 'college' in the UK is a system to occupy retards who dropped out of school at 16.
Not neccessarily My line manager has a degree in psychology (Edit: Point i was trying to make was that if you have a degree and then apply for an unrelated job, you STILL have much more chance than someone without a degree at all, or even a college education) And i work part time in a shop to pass the time from college day to college dayGRAWRG. wrote:get a degree in something with a high demand, and you'll get a job. it's pretty simple.
Anyone else have any serious headaches with UCAS? I spent about an hour working out how to input my qualifications properly and well, then i tried to help GRAWRG too
Oh - And GRAWRG - You disappeared off FB Chat before i could think of it, but have you considered applying to Edinburghs Heriot Watt? It's very, very well known for it's Science, Engineering and Technology courses and offers a ChemEng course too.
http://www.undergraduate.hw.ac.uk/eps/chemeng/
And i'm fairly sure you'd qualify for funding from SAAS (Students Awards Agency for Scotland).
You'd be at Uni literally a stones throw from the Edinburgh city limits, about 20 mins from Princes Street and another 20 minutes from one of the biggest shopping centre's in Europe
EDIT: Took another look through, and there are some interesting funding options - ie for 3rd year (inclusive) onwards, there is Atkins funding for ChemEng with a possibility of a paid placement AS WELL. http://www.hw.ac.uk/student-life/schola ... 363130.htm - Just a thought Think it's Uni specific though.

Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
i dont know what you meant by your post m2. are you saying that psychology was a shitty major but the dude still got a job? if so, that isn't related to what i said o.o
but i only picked the schools offering chem engineering within an hour of where id be living. so theres no leeway for looking at other schools, lol.
also: thanks for the heads up ozzy. i'll focus on the others.

M2: You blagged something about colleges not being for retards? Well I agree, there are some exceptions, maybe in the case of yourself, but I'm sure we can both come to an agreement that generally sixth form students out perform college students by a significant margin.
@Grawrg: Any particular reason you're travelling across the Atlantic to our humble island? You got fam here?

Re: Who's Applying to Uni this year?
Blagged? Man you're out to get me today ^^ I was merely pointing out that college isn't JUST for retards who dropped highschool at 16 ... By doing my HND at my college, i step straight into 3rd year of my chosen university course, therefore bypassing the first two years of Uni, going straight into specialised study and since the HND is a 1 year course, i'm effectively shaving an entire year off my education by going through college first ^^ Strategic Advantage0zzy wrote:M2: You blagged something about colleges not being for retards? Honestly I think the whole college idea is just a scheme to keep the menaces off the streets.M2-Destroyer wrote:Blagged? HND is a way to skip to the final year ... but what kind of job does it lead to? Medicine, Dentistry, Law? Didn't think so. I've never seen a college student become a doctor, dentist etc, and there's a reason for that (I have seen them do law qualifications in a college, but they were not employed at all)
I presume it was BTEC based course for either I.T, Business? Something clearly over supplied and under demanded in today's economy?
Further, shave a year off education? Dude you do realise the 'year' you shaved off is the first year of uni? i.e the partying, smoking pot, going wild year? The year where (for most courses) the end of year examinations do not go to your final mark? You've basically skipped the best year of your life.
No offense to you man, I'm sure it'll lead to good things for you.
