SGE Trailer
We need a Starport Trailer for the game who wants to help me make one?
Re: SGE Trailer
I have an idea for help I'll tell people to help you
Re: SGE Trailer
Manganator made something a while ago but it got no response so I think he removed it off of youtube.
Re: SGE Trailer
I'm willing to make one, but I'm not entirely sure Toonces can pay me.
Re: SGE Trailer
About a year ago I was thinking SGE needed an intro cut scene and I started playing around with a storyboard script. I never got around to posting it, but since you bring up a similar idea, here it is. Its probably too long for what you're looking for (about 2.5 minutes) and you're probably looking more for in-game action shots instead of a CGI cut scene style promo, but it might be useful.
GRRRRR: I tried to attach it as a text file and it says "The extension txt is not allowed". What? Since when is a text file a threat? Come on, admins!
Ok, here it is. Sorry if there are formatting issues. It would have been better as an text attachment.

Notes
Never show the hero. Keep the gender and race as neutral as possible. The hero should be human, but thats it.
Never show any English words. If something needs a label, use made up symbols, just make them feel like a language.
The nemesis should be one of the more malevolent looking characters from the in-game choices.
Scene 1 - Back story (20 seconds)
Opening shot of Earth
should see some space traffic in the shot
Airport shot
must have background that makes this clear this is still Earth
At an airport-like launch pad with a transport ship (whale?)
Cut to see parents waving goodbye
Shot is from the ladder to ascend into the transport ship
holding on to each other, slightly emotional
Camera pulls back somewhat
From the back (over the shoulder), see our hero waving too
From the parents perspective
See the hero turn and ascend into the ship
Should start with the head already turned
Door is closed
A few quick shots of the takeoff
possibly one from under the rockets, one from above as the ship passes by, and one from orbit showing earth and space
1 shot inside the ship that shows many SGE characters in the seats
The people must include "Nemesis". Draw attention to this char is some way (movement, etc)
Exchange between a merchant and the hero
Again, over the shoulder
Takes place on the transport ship, in front of an airlock
Close-up for a Handshake, keys dropped into hero's hand
Hero walks past the merchant, opens air lock, walks through
Shot from space
In a shipyard (but not New New York)
Merchant Cruiser along side the transport ship
Ships decouple, transport ship moves off
Scene 2 - First flight (20 seconds)
Shot from inside the merchant cruiser
Panning from right to left
Through the window of the airlock, the transport ship moves off, back towards Earth
Pan by 20 empty cargo holds and space for more
Pan to 8 hardware bays
Continue panning to the left, now 270 degrees, to an entrance to the cockpit
Camera from the back of the ship
See the hero walking froward into the cockpit
Rapid camera fly into the cockpit area, see space in front
See as the hero sits in the captain's chair (approaches and sits from the side)
View should include Earth, the transport ship descenting, the moon, the sun, and New New York in the distance
From the hero's perspective, panning
Show controls, see that many sliders are very low / near empty.
Camera from the left of the hero, slightly behind
Shows control panel, large field of space out the wind shield
See the hero start to pilot the ship
Hero's head turns to the right as another merchant cruiser appear
Rapid zoom through the wind shield to the other ship, rapid turn to the right in front of its wind shield
See nemesis piloting a his own ship
Pull up and back to see both ships
Ships fly under the camera, camera turns around (to the left) as they do (keep plane flat)
As the ships pull away, the camera continues to rotate up to keep them in frame
New New York becomes visible at the top of the frame, clearly the destination
Scene 3 - New New York (25)
Docking
From within the cockpit
Can see other types of ships already docked
Exit
Hero passes through a low portal, sees the station.
Shot from behind, camera follows through the portal and swings up some.
Walking through corridors
Passing by Police HQ (see thugs being hauled in)
Pass by the bank, not sure on visual. Top hat guy and homeless wanting a handout?
Walking thorough hardware area
Pointing out things to buy
Manager behind hero motions to clerks to get the stuff
Trading up
Trading in keys for larger, shiner keys
Similar shot to getting the first ship
New ship
Approaches Merchant Cruiser
Sees clerks from hardware loading stuff (how do you show shields?)
Scene 4 - Building (20 sec)
Warping
Approach a warp point
Pause for a moment
Accelerate and enter, distort and dissipate
Re-appear from distortion. Must be on opposite side from camera view
First planet
Shot of the new system
Make is recognizable. Interesting gas giant configuration?
Focus on a single planet (would like Ocean but there are landing logistics issues)
pause for a moment (necessary for later)
Ship approaches
Landing
Shot of ship entering atmosphere
Shot of ship w/ thrusters on, landing
Dome
Shot of unloading equipment
Shot of hero on the hill, directing construction
Visual of cranes and skeletal structures
Shot of flaks being constructed near dome
Shot of hero standing tall, surveying the creation
Scene 5 - Reality check: invasion (20 sec)

2 ships descending through atmosphere, level off at ground level, accelerate
Zoom in to see nemesis at helm of 1 ship
Defence
People scramble, see people manning the flaks
Flaks begin to fire
Shot of minor damage to one ship
Solar cannon begins to fire (single shot)
Attack
Taking some hits, two flaks are taken out (other invader)
Nemesis lands within dome while solar shoots at other invader
Surrender
Nemesis stands within the dome, people kneel before him
Ejection
hero is forcibly taken to ship (arms held by two thugs), thrown to ship
Shot of ship leaving atmosphere, some smoke from the ground can be seen
Scene 6 - Good deeds (25 sec)
Shot of some flying around. Warp into a different system?
Bar entry
Docking shot
Entering the bar shot (ignore merchant)
(Entering should be through old west doors)
Room contains thugs and some very nervous people
Game of dice instead of a pool table (now that we have a game in ports!)
Drink and deal
Sits at bar, motions for a drink, bar tender gives one
Nervous pilot (in a lame orange jump suit) comes up beside, shaking hand w/ cash
Hero nods, they leave together
Escort
See both ships depart. Must see dude in jump suit. In a flower? Smoking slightly.
Warp together to the next system
Shot of from across the system, from inside a new cockpit
sees the hero and escort ships through the cockpit
See at least the shadow of the guy. Must give evil impression
Ship accelerates and starts shooting (pea shots)
Camera behind attacker. Speedstar?
Other 2 ships clearly moving to a port
Hero ship turns around and engages.
Merchant cruiser 2nd shoots down shots
Hero ship still drifting backwards, between the other ships
Shoots volley of exploding bullets
Attacker blows up, escape pod shoots away
Trading up
Quick dock at base
From behind, going into the police HQ
Row of cadets, from behind. General in front pinning stars to each in turn.

See flying off in ISC
Scene 7 - Final Combat (15 sec)

See original colony. Pause on it for a moment
Opponent entry
Fly camera to far side of system, see Sethdar appear
(after pause) Fly in further to see nemesis at helm
Nemesis give a gleeful smirk
Overview
Shot of the whole system? Turning camera?
(after a short pause) Both ships accelerate towards the middle
Encounter shots (back/forth shots)
Seth fires EMP
ISC fires torp
ISC fires G-14
Seth fires nuke
Both in frame
Both grav
Missiles hit
Screen quick fade to white

Re: SGE Trailer
Just so everyone knows, pwnster emailed me about this idea and I said I liked the idea. I told him that if I used his trailer, I would compensate him and we can discuss payment options. But there is no guarantee i would choose to use the work regardless of how much time and effort he put into it. The same goes for anyone else who might be interested in making a trailer or tutorial movie for Starport.
Re: SGE Trailer
I support the idea and would be willing to take part in action shots ingame or even make one myself if I had the time and thought I wouldn't get bored. However, talk of financial compensation bothers me. Some people may not like the way toonces runs the game and feel he should pay them, but it is as free a game as you want it to be. A trailer should be made for fun and free. Were the game pay to play then you could request financial compensation.
*although instead of money. Request an awesome noise to be made when you log in like the toonces thunder

I like the script, but it sounds more like a movie than a intro.
Which just gave me a better idea, a starport movie
Toonces just got promoted to a director

The doodles I made some time ago were actually first intended to be a storyboard.

The guy you see working there would then start to tell his life story (and the story of SGE) to the thing visiting him.
Considering Toonces might pay I'm willing to help whichever person/team. As long as I'm properly credited
I have experience with After Effects, Photoshop, ParticleIllusion, 3DS Max, Premiere Pro, Audacity, Flash, and some other programs that might prove to be interesting.
Also have a general experience with image formats and such.
ADVICE:
First thing you should get is the music. Trailers and teasers are often cut to the music. and considering you don't have a movie to choose shots from the music will determine the length of your shots and which ones you'll have. Note: Since toonces is supporting this I wouldn't be surprised if we're allowed to use all SGE assets, meaning images AND MUSIC. Sadly enough the SGE music isn't very trailer-worthy. Maybe someone can remix? I have plenty of advice on tracks/albums that might prove to be good enough to use as a template of some sorts.
Secondly: Will it be pre-rendered or will it feature footage from the game?
Problem with pre-rendered in combination with footage is usually that the pre-rendered shots will look a whole lot better than the in-game stuff, making the in-game stuff look bad in comparison. This is true for big budget games and it's especially true for SGE.
So there's two options:
Purely pre-rendered. With animated titles.
Purely in-game footage. With animated titles.

Re: SGE Trailer
ooh i rock at remixing music, if some one can send me some of the music files actually used in starport i will see what i can do, cause i dont think there is a way i can extract the music from the other files.

The Starport_Music_Battle is great as-is if you want a 52 second video. The title might stand on its own - there is a 50 sec and 1:20 version. Otherwise yeah, you need to remix.
I'd stay away from commercial music due to license issues.
Music files are in /Program Files/StarportGE/data/sounds and are in .ogg format.nine-breaker wrote:ooh i rock at remixing music, if some one can send me some of the music files actually used in starport i will see what i can do, cause i dont think there is a way i can extract the music from the other files.
Before anyone can offer help I think we need to have at least this question answered. Pwnster, what are your thoughts?MadAce wrote: Secondly: Will it be pre-rendered or will it feature footage from the game?

Ogg is an open standard file format, usually used for audio but also has video codecs.nine-breaker wrote:Not to sound like a file noob or anything, but what the hell is a ogg file?
This is in contrast to MP3 which is patented and you need a license to write software then encodes/decodes it. Blah. You can see why PlayTechtonics didn't use MP3.
This is also in contrast to Windows WMA or Apple's FairPlay (think iTunes store music) which are corporate owned and sometimes they will ggrant you a license, but then they also inject DRM into the files in an attempt to curtail your rights under the copyright statutes. Really blah. At least use MP3, ogg if possible.
Longer answer here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogg
Most apps that aren't from Microsoft or Apple support the ogg formats these days.

Re: SGE Trailer
News from your favorite director and project leader:
Toonces wants and advertisement so I am thinking we use the remixed battle music from nine, storyboard from mad.ace, and get a group of players together to fly each type of ship (special, freighter, scout, etc) use triquan, invasion, fighting, npc hunting, building, and missions to take us through a 1 minute 30 second - 2 minute pre-view of starport. Then I myself will get Adobe Premier and start editing all information, add titles and such and send it to Mad Ace for special after effects. Then to toonces. This will take some time to make so its not a 1-2-3 thing. I myself am working on getting Adobe CS4 Master Collection for my home computer since school is out atm. Any one that wants to help let me stress to pm me so i can get the gang together.

The same goes for anyone else who might be interested in making a trailer or tutorial movie for Starport.

Re: SGE Trailer
I've been thinking on how to advertise SGE since the dawn of SGE. This will be my 4th attempt at creating something SGE-movie like. Finally I'm no longer alone.
Pwnster, I don't want to be annoying but I do have a little proposal of my own. It's a little more anti-social since it requires a little more skill and thus less people can contribute, but the goal will be industry standard.
Anyways, here we go:
What's the main selling point of SGE? It's warfare, sandbox style and drama. The politics, the sense of acheivement, and the amazing stories that emerge from this.
What I'm proposing is to advertise THIS and don't use any in-game footage at all, as that's a little out-dated. The result would be what's called a cinematic trailer.
The template will be:http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/dec ... ic-trailer
I know, that's too kick a$$. We won't be able to do something like that unless we have about 6 people whose job it is to do this.
But the story fits. The voiceover. The feeling. Catch my drift?
What I propose to do is to cinematically re-create a REAL SGE story. A story of a corp emerging in a young galaxy, finding a place among the great despite all odds and finally sucumbing to an overwhelming enemy in a heroic style like in 300. Or something equally epic. So we have to find a story that happened for real in the world of Starport. A cool one. Preferably pretty recent to reflect SGE of today, not the one I knew (that's be so Epic Hollywood would start to moan about too much awesomeness THEY didn't create).
All of this in glorious pre-rendered 3D with very cool (not perfect, but meh) effects and star wars esque backgrounds with a hazy and dusty voice telling the story. Im inclined to stick to space and not show anything on the surface other than our well-known lay-outs. So no animated little men like in stuff like THe Incredibles. Basically I want to avoid having to render/model/animate figures. That's very hard and a lot of work for very little cinematic gain. Perhaps a kind of cool, stylized anime figures could be used if any shots are needed in which people can be seen, but that'd require two production pipelines resulting in quite a lot of overhead.
About 3-4 minutes long? During the building/emerging time we could use the standard SGE music, with maybe some orchestral undertones mixed underneath. Then for the grand finale we should find something free to use and good. I may have some stuff laying around so I'll check it out.
So what would we need?
-A good story that really happened in which we use the real player names of the players. This would emulate the main selling point of SGE IMHO, which is its epic playing experience and community. A contest maybe would be in order.
-A clear art style we can all agree with. Cell shaded? Medium realistic? WoW-cartoony? Hyper-realistic? To be discussed. One important thing with the style is that it shoud be obvious it's a cinematic trailer and not in-game graphics.
-Someone to write the text. Maybe Manganator/BtMangan/Zacko/Dienekes/Brian could do this. I'll ask him.
-Someone with a good microphone and dito voice to voice this stuff. Really important. Maybe to be found within the SGE community. If not we might have to scrounge around some acting forums or affiliates.
-Someone to do the 3D, texturing, special effects and animating of the titles. (that'd be me...)
-Someone to create concept art, backgrounds, textures, 2D assets and make the final versions of the titles (in Photoshop) so I can then animate them (in After Effects, or 3DS max depending on the decided upon art style). Photoshop skills required.
-Someone to remix the music.
-Someone to edit. Problem is that the final renders of all programs will be too massive to swap over the net so maybe proxies could be used by the main editor and then this Premiere Pro file would then be sent to the guy who rendered everything (that'd be me...) for the final final render.
A place to host the final movie so that it may get the attention it deserves. Would Toonces be willing to host it and pay for the bandwith it'll eat?
-About 3 months of time. I know it's a lot, but I'm confident the result will be on par with the invested effort.
NOTE: In order not to waste time we should contact Toonces once we have everything we need to get started. That way he won't say "Meh, I don like it. Too cool." after 3 months of working.
This isn't my final offer. I'd be happy to contribute to anything to be decided upon. So don't worry about the above wall of text. If ya don't like it or want to propose a change, I'd be appy to listen. I had a few projects pending but I'm putting them on hold for this.
Any comments?

Okelidokeli then.
Any ideas on "the story" of the add? Meaning will you handle eachSGE profession one by one, or each ship one by one or a few battles or the main features?
You know, you could check out gametrailers.com and find a good example or two. Always handy.
Well, you know which skills I have to offer.
EDIT:
Oh and my proposal isn't a documentary. It's a cinematic trailer. Something else entirely.
(*sigh* artists... supposedly always open for criticism, until you give it. )
