Deer Meat
if you could buy it at the store, would you?
my friend thinks that the entire appeal to deer is hunting them. i disagree. i think plenty of people like the taste, but dont want to hunt. or dont have the time to hunt. or just arent good at hunting.
thoughts?

Re: Deer Meat
I've never tried venison. I assume its gamey tasting, right?
Re: Deer Meat
i dont know what gamey tasting is. deer is the only non-normal meat ive eaten. i think it tastes good thought. not the same as anything, but just as good as beef or whatever.
Re: Deer Meat
Gamey means grassy tasting.

Re: Deer Meat
I'm pretty sure gamey means greasy and fatty/chewy. I could be wrong.
And I have tasted it, its pretty good and I might have it every now and then for variety.

Re: Deer Meat
gamey meat is essentially dark meat.

Re: Deer Meat
Never had deer meat (as far as I can remember), might be great to try some. I imagine it would be quite expensive though if it was for sale in the supermarket.
Re: Deer Meat
Deer meat isn't bad. My dad used to hunt. I'd still buy beef, but I believe if you kill it then you should eat it or donate the meat. I don't think killing for just for sport is a good thing. The term gamey can mean a specific taste which can be influenced by what the animal eats, and if it was scared right before it died. My dad used to say that deer with too much adrenaline right before they died (probably from running from my dad with a gun...lol) that it would effect the taste. Also the younger the deer the more tender the meat. You don't want a elderly deer to eat, the meat is tough.
Re: Deer Meat
Reindeer is awesome with some Mashed potatoes.
Re: Deer Meat
yeah idk how feasible it would be to have a deer farm, someone told me that deer arent easy to farm... which makes sense, since deer meat isnt sold in the market. but yeah, ive also heard that the adrenaline affects the taste... like if you dog hunt and kill the deer after it's been chased for hours. i havent had any bad deer meat before though.
anyway, i just feel like there are people who would buy it. and that's what i wanted to know.

Re: Deer Meat
There are several deer/elk farms. In the restaurant we can not serve wild deer ( against the law) Venison goes well with cream based sauces because it is so lean. Denver leg is the most affordable/tasty cut besides the saddle/racks, but they get pricey. Also the farm raised deer is far less "gamey" than wild.

You really are a chef . what restaurant do you work at, by the way? (If it isn't too personal)CrazyChef wrote:There are several deer/elk farms. Re: Deer Meat
I actually have eaten one before. They taste a bit sweeter than beef, and leave a musky after-taste. They came in a package of exotic burger meat our family used to buy ages ago, Ostrich meat was included as well.Dark.Cloud wrote:they sell bison meat some places... how hugging manly would it be to have a big ole bison burger
Re: Deer Meat
yea.. i wouldnt buy it, i really dont care for it has a funky dirt taste to it to me. only form i would buy it in is jerky which is actually better than beef jerkey imo
Re: Deer Meat
i have bison wraps every time i go into town. wraps because burgers are for fags. taste like good lean beef. croc meat is where it's at.

Re: Deer Meat
Completely all for the idea there GRAWRG, but then it would fall victim to comercialisation - Much like chicken and other comercially sold meat has. (Added water, preservatives, all that sh*te)
Anyone tried Swordfish? Had a lovely steak when i was in Crete, lovely little coastal village called Elounda

I have had crocodile sausage. Was a bit too chewy for my taste (and also spicey, but that was just spices not the meat). Swordfish is too dry and...somewhat sticky textured for me to enjoy.
