[idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
There's an idea for a new galaxy where every planet has a different map (different walls, etc) because they are randomly generated.
Each planet's map would be unique, but overall they would all be "natural" rather than the designed look that the standard surface maps have right now.
Like it?

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
Sounds good so long as some arent completely impossible
Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
Do you mean modular or literally randomly generated?
Modular maps is easier to code and can yield seaming endless results:
Modular maps is easier to code and can yield seaming endless results:
- Each module would be a 8x8, thus equating to 64 tiles.
By each module being a 8 by 8, you can select 64 modules per planet.
If you have 100 map modules randomized you have the possibility of (3.7x10^41) arrangements because the limit of the map size is 64x64.

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
im not a programmer or anything so maybe im wrong, but keep in mind that everything should still be connected; there shouldn't be random squares or areas that are cut off.Mel'Kaven wrote:Do you mean modular or literally randomly generated?

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
Yes I like it, this would be much better and change things up for builders and invaders constantly, I really like it actually
Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
Well yeah, you would do checks to see if the modules were compatible with multiple parses before you place the module.... >_>Saber-Fury wrote:im not a programmer or anything so maybe im wrong, but keep in mind that everything should still be connected; there shouldn't be random squares or areas that are cut off.Mel'Kaven wrote:Do you mean modular or literally randomly generated?

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
I think its a great idea, would definately add alot of different possible layouts and reduce the boredom for people that have "invaded every type of layout 1000 times" i think the newest server with different landing zones was a good start but its not really random. ive landed on quite a few planets there and the zones werent really "random" most planets had the same landing zone in one of 2 set spots, so while the layouts were definately different, there was no real variety among the same style of layout.
I would also like to see planet layouts randomly change once a dome on a planet dies. would keep already banged servers a little more interesting once you add randomly generated layouts and landing zones to them.
that will allow you to vastly increase the variety on servers already built rather than having to start yet another perma.

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
I don't know about randomly changing planets because that wouldn't make any sense, but I mean 10000 layouts completely randomly generated would certainly make things interested, but I cannot stress this enough we DO NOT need another rushed perms toonce if you're gonna implement this on another new server suggest some settings based on our feedback let us vote.
Also maybe add another few new things besides just new layouts, maybe even buff building some, without builders there is no game

Or you could do fractal heightmaps.

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
It's coming along nicely. Should be out by Friday. Stop by and check it out and let me know what you think.
I'm also upping alien generation rates a bit and making them different for every planet.

Toonces, I have to say this could be one of the best things you done in awhile if you can pull it off.

Will there be some kind of preview of the random generation before it is implemented?

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
yes. It's currently on display in Blitz.
Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
This would be fantastic if done right. My only concerns would be making impossible to invade planets (which may or may not be possible -- I honestly don't know). And putting the pieces together in such a way that it ends up walling off significant portions of the planet (in a 2D environment, this should be "easy" to avoid).
Overall, yes, this would be great.

I mean peolple have capped DD rocky rat mazes, so I don't think anything entirely impossible would arise but so long as its like a 99 to 1 ratio im ok with a handful of impossible or near impossible because nobody knows what theyre looking for so even for builders it'd e pure luck to stumble upon.
Also toonces what kind of settings aree you doing for the server?
10k or 25k domes?
Modules no modules?
Corp size?
Map size?
Classic homeworlds replica has my vote
Edit: also no fog of war please.
We have highly advanced spacecrafts!

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
How about to make this server super unique lets make bio 3 cap at 5k pop. And bio 2 at 2.5k
Start raging. But it could be cool.

NO ASTEROIDS
Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
I second this. Also no Fog of War and No matter what else you do, NO ASTEROIDS! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, NO ASTEROIDS!Saber-Fury wrote:NO ASTEROIDS

Re: [idea] Randomly generated planet surfaces
The only problem I've seen so far, is sometimes LZ is HUGE. It makes doming way more challenging especially with the availability of surface missles and the new cloaking patch. I think the idea of different layouts is cool, but perhaps not make the layouts so large that invaders can sit and just pick off the defenses from a long ways back.

Well, surface missiles are going to get a range reduction, i'm pretty sure...Luna wrote:The only problem I've seen so far, is sometimes LZ is HUGE.
