The 39 New Planet Layouts

Post by Dr.Strangelove » Fri Oct 02, 2009 12:57 am

I originally posted this idea in the Launch Pad, but was recommended to post here.

I play on P2 which, like all servers before the new layouts came about, only possess the original 30. I want to try the new layouts but dont want to leave P2 as I have a good holdings, a good corp of trusted compedent players who are happy there and I love the map. But monotony can come into play once you have mastered these layouts. With only 30 different ones you can do the same layout numerous times in a sitting.
I believe that it is possible to in-corporate the new layouts into the old perma's without hassle or inconvenience to its current players.
There are 69 layouts in total, so when a planet dies, at the moment the dead dome expires and the planet is now ready for a new dome it should be reset. By this I mean the layout will randomly reset to any of the current 69 layouts in play. This way no-one's current colony's are affected. Plus it will entice player to keep good layouts clean for fear of losing a difficult colony to cap. This works both ways though, as a layout that is no a hard cap, could mean players deliberatly killing colony's in the hope of a better layout.
I also think this would give incentive to players to return to the older perma's by giving the servers a sence of newness.
I have spoken to many players on P2 and Classic Homeworlds about this and have recieved positive feedback on the issue.
Though some have said its not realistic, to which I've replied, if a planet has gone through 3 disasters and the whole planets life has been wiped out, surely its not improbable to concieve that it goes through a change in landscape before it becomes inhabitable again?
Another arguement against it is that if the layout changes, then surely any mines that were on the colony will be lost. But in my opinion the pro's far out-weight the con's.
Anyway feel free to give me any feedback. :)

I like this too.

This is probably much easier to implement than some of the other ideas such as an expanding universe, but there are still complications. Without getting into any details (I always seem to get in trouble if I post anything about the way SGE was written) I doubt it will happen.

Also I see very little economic incentive for Playtechtonics. How does this development effort result in more tokens being purchased? There is more economic incentive not to implement upgrades to older galaxies.

That, and they just get so boring. it would be much more exciting if there were many old layouts, and a few new ones

I like this idea except one thing, I don't think the planets should reset each time. There should be one massive reroll in which each planet gets a new true layout that only takes effect after the current colony dies.

I think im in love with this idea, however kotton has a point some people do like a layout but take a colony whose dome does not use that certain layout well. people that do want that layout are shafted.

perhaps make it a 50/50 chance of the colony layout altering due to the massive pollution disaster. that way theres still a decent chance you get a new layout, but also a posibility of keeping the old one

whats the chance of that seriously.
u have a chance of 1/39 layouts they could possibly have to kill the col off 39 times just to get the right layout, i honestly cant see anyone doing that :)

I agree, getting a specific layout would be a statistical fluke or would take you 6 months on average, but getting rid of the handful of truly crappy layouts would become commonplace. Robotchicken's idea of a one-time reroll upon next colony death takes care of this nicely. On the other hand, maybe we do want the layouts to get progressively harder as the perma ages?

It would take a while. There are 73 layouts (according to Toonces, see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15402). Assuming it takes you two days to kill it and 5 days to clear, it would take 73 / 2 * 7 days on average to get a specific layout, or 255 days. If someone is that committed, then ok, let 'em have it!

my guess would of been akito (if you even played with him)

I don't like this idea for several reasons.

The old servers are a living relic of the layouts that were there when the server first started. If you got a new layout every time the colony deserted or disastered, what is going to stop people from continually killing off their cols until all of their colonies are only the very hardest layouts? I know I would certainly do this no doubt about, as would a lot of other people. This would add to the idea that established corps have an unfair advantage over new people to the server.

The newest permas have the new layouts and they aren't near being full, plenty of room to play there and have fun with the new layouts. You don't want to leave the perma you play on, but you want to stop the monotony? Adding a 2nd perma sounds like just the cure, as it adds new people you can play with and against.

They said pollution disaster, not deserted. It would not make sense if the layout changed when people deserted.

would it be that hard to make it that a planet only changed once. i like the idea of a 50/50 chance of it changing. if it changes or doesn't after a disaster it stays that way forever. it doesn't change every time it dies.

i hate nearly all of the new layouts and play dead servers because i dont want to deal with any of the new garbage layouts or ASSteroid belts. at least i know the right dome positions on the old ones that are garbage.
