Need advice plus looking for guild

Post by saberson » Wed Jun 17, 2009 5:02 pm

Hi,

I played this game a long time ago, I didnt deposit as could not afford it at the time however I managed to get the best ship I could without RL credits, cant remember the name. Anyway I did actually take a liking to the game, I got help from some other solo guy, now my aim was to set up my own colony but I did not and still dont know all the traps and pitfalls of this so a fair deal was I help this guy build his colony and once it gets strong he would keep me right for setting one up, suffice to say I put alot of effort into helping the guy and obviously with him being a semi newbie well his colony got wiped with 4 days of its inception then he stopped playing, I stopped playing shortly after as I checked and checked fo colonies but they were either to well defended or near guilds who had clearly left a couple of planets so that when some newbie started building they could say they would leave them alone then kill them at the first oppurtunity.

I have not got my old account but I would like to join a guild , preferably with a bunch of older folk since I want to just learn the ropes, plus if I could have a good network of advice straight at the start I can get to work making money and preparing for a colony as well as studying how experianced people have placed their colony structures plus I could go on a server thats suited to a newbie like myself. I say a guild with older people as Im 29 myself so Im just looking for like minded folk. (Just enjoying the game but using some "common" at the same time :) e.g having clear goals, adhering to alliances but still holding their own )

I am just going through the forum FAQ at the momment, I want to play but I am wandering how realistic it is for me to get anywhere without me putting in at absolute minimum 20 pounds per month? (Would be nice to see the game first then deposit as I played project entropia and that is massivly expensive so I am wary and dont want to get so far and realise for me to get to the level I want to be at its going to be a war of whos got lots of RL cash <------this is one of the main reasons I am unsure about getting into this game fully in conjunction with experiances from other games with a similiar model, ideally I would like to go on a massive server with just 3 or 4 players which I can build colonies but last time I played I noticed you needed to have spent RL cash to get into those, this further implies the question, how can I truely learn where and what to put in any colonies? as I will get blown up before I can see the mechanics)

Any advice is appreciated and cheers for reading this! The fact is I did like this game but I want to get furthe this time, this is dependant on how much success can be achieved from playing the game with no initial caveats

Well, to start, its very nice to see someone approaching the game like this instead of the millions of other threads that are poorly written and annoying.

For one, you do not need to put ANY money in the game to be successful, it just helps. I know i have never bought tokens in RL, but they do help keep things running smoothly. That being said, i would suggest that if you are going to buy tokens, don't do it to start off, because without learning how to fight, you are just wasting your money.

You have the right idea, you should first join a corp (they are corporations, not guilds) to learn the ropes a little. A few things to remember:
1.Experience does not matter on permas, so don't worry about it if you die, and don't be afraid to take chances to learn more. Dying isn't a problem except to fuel, and if you don't have a home server, you can just learn on other servers first, before choosing your home server that you wish to play.

2.Many people will see you as just another newb if you join a server and then ask for money. The best way to avoid this is to trade for money, and show that you are really trying, and just need a hand. Some people will be willing to help you out if you are polite and hard working, but keep in mind that not everyone will.

3. If you are trying to learn more, keep reading some of the guides in these forums. Some are very helpful and can teach you how to support colonies, or how to fight or invade, etc.
Here are two of them:
Nightmare's New Players Guide http://starportgame.com/sgeforum/viewto ... f=3&t=5684
and -nox-'s extremely helpful Tactical Guide http://starportgame.com/sgeforum/viewto ... =3&t=13934

Some of these are long, but if you have the time, they are definitely worth a read. They are immensely helpful, and should do more than someone can explain. However, if you have additional questions, there are many people both on the forums and in-game willing to help you. Stop by Battle Royale sometime if you have questions you would like me to address, or any other server with a person willing to help

Nice piece! lol.

It seems that most of the veteran starport players are approaching their late twenties. It's quite easy to spot the ones that aren't, as they mistype and misuse grammar accordingly. (NOTE to starportians: Maturity is judged based on coherent sentences whether you like it or not. If you don't learn this lesson now, you will learn it in the real world - if you ever leave your parents' basement  )

For a new player, I would suggest starting on an older permaverse (over 1000 days old). Generally speaking, these have very little active players to ruin your day. The best thing you can do is chat. If you're a nice guy, generally you can get some sound advice from others.

Like Catfish said, there is absolutely zero need to buy tokens to learn to play the game. Tokens are (generally) used to extend playing time on a particular server when your fuel tank has reached 0 on that server. I would suggest exploring the universe in search of starports. These ports will allow you to complete little missions (taxiing, escorting, ect.) until you have a few more options for ships. Notice that starports also buy and sell resources at varying prices based on supply and demand. These resources are your key for making money - buy low, and sell high.

As far as colonization goes, you must understand the incredible size of the galaxy you are most likely playing in. Take some time to zoom the galaxy map all the way out, and take it in. As all newer players start at Sol, they tend to stick around it and not venture too far to colonize. This is a VERY bad idea. The further you get from sol, the greater the rewards - especially for new players. Ports have better %s, planets are less likely to be colonized, ect. The starbases (you can view them on the galaxy map) essentially perform the same functions as sol, so you can use them to change ships/buy hardware.

I would suggest that you spend all your fuel on one server exploring and discovering these ways to make money. Don't worry about the money you make, just remember how you made it(i.e. what worked, what didn't work) and take that knowledge to a fresh server where you have a full load of fuel and try again.

Thanks for you response, is appreciated! I will stop by sometime, cheers for that.

Yes I am currently reading the following topic:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10166

Very well written and interesting, it appears there are much more newbie related materials on the forum from when I last played which is good, I will check out the other guides you linked as well. Currently I am thinking of somewhat adhering to the resource I linked above by getting say 2 to 4mil before thinking about a colony and putting my stats so they are more suited to building.

Its good you see what I was getting at with the deposit and never took it as a troll, its just I do deposit in games but as you pointed out and was the point I was highlighting I need that initial experience so I can best spend my deposit when I take the plunge :)

I am in the process of reading quite a bit since I posted but I am going to just do some trading runs to start out with, also respect what you said about asking for money, I am not too fond of begging myself and can see why it is hated.

Im away on now :) Just have a horrific vision of spending a while amassing cash, finally getting my colony down and it getting nuked :D

N.B Thanks as well "Barefoot" since I must have posted at the same time as yourself. I think I am going to take your advice and just learn how to get good at making money. At times when fuel gets low I can spend a portion of that time reading. (So much stuff has been perefected in this game by Starport veterans, I remember trying to invade a planet once, I think I lasted not much longer than 3 seconds! - hopefully I will get there)

Just to finalize this post, it is heartning with regards to your comment on the galaxy size so I think I am going to go further out. I also shoot myself in the foot by being too trusting and asking for colony advice on the server I am on, I think thats what I did last time around so its no wander that wherever I tried to build it was shot up 20 minutes later lol - live and learn I guess!
