Going Offline

Characters in Starport: Galactic Empires never leave the galaxy, even when their human controller is offline. So it is a good idea to find a safe place to park before you go offline. If you leave him out in space, there is a chance he may go undiscovered, but if he is found, he will be a sitting duck if someone decides they want to blow him up.

UN-Controlled Space is a safe place to sleep, but you will be taxed at the following rate: (Experience - Reputation) * Hours . If your reputation is higher than your experience you will not be charged anything. Because of this scaled tax, going offline in UN-Controlled Space is generally the best option for newer players, but may not be lucrative for characters with higher experience. If your character runs out of credits while in UN-Controlled Space and cannot pay the tax, he may be towed out of UN-Controlled Space to a random place in the galaxy. The UN will charge the tax to your Star Base bank account if you run out of credits on your person.

If you own a colony, your character can be left in the colony, making him safe unless that colony is successfully invaded in which case your character will be kicked out into space where the invading party will usually kill you. However, if your colony is under U.N. protection while you are sleeping on it, you will be charged taxes for sleeping in U.N. space.

You can also leave your character at a starport by checking in to the Deep Space Inn. The Inn is an expensive option, and your character will be charged by the hour. Ports change from 2000 to 4000 credits per hour, but the price is tripled for pirates. You can reduce the hourly rate by buying drinks at the tavern. Because of the price of drinks this should only be done if you plan on going offline for a lengthy period. If you can no longer afford to stay at the port your ship will be kicked out into open space and after a few minutes it will land on the nearest uninhabited planet.

If you have to log off while outside of one of these three safe areas, your other option is to land on an out of the way planet, preferably a tiny planet or a gas giant as these are often less explored, and hope that you are not found by another player.

If you are killed while offline your escape pod will appear at Sol where you will be charged standard U.N. taxes. You will also have normal penalties for dying.

Your character will continue to generate warp fuel at the normal rate while you are offline, and so will have a large amount stored up when you return.
