Duels allow you to fight another person without damaging either player's real shields level.

A duel is fought with imaginary shields. Each player gets 1000 duel shields and the first captain to lose his 1000 duel shields loses the duel. Beware that during a duel, your ship is only immune to weapons fired by your duel opponent. All other weapons will damage your ship normally! So beware of interlopers and deployed defenses during your duel.

One player proposes a duel to another by using the Hail order in the Orders menu at the top of the screen. A duel is indicated by either player adding the Duel list item to the trade table. An amount of credits may also be wagered on the duel by adding credit amounts to the trade table. Each captain usually puts up the same amount of credits but you can put in different amounts as a way of giving odds. Whoever wins the duel will get the total money put in by both parties.

Once the terms are accepted the duel begins and lasts for 3 minutes or until there is a victor. While the duel is in effect, weapons from the ship you are dueling with don't actually damage your ship or reduce your shields. However the game keeps track of the damage for the purposes of the duel. If the timer runs out on the duel, the player who has inflicted the most damage on the other is declared the winner. In the event of a tie the winner is decided by coin flip.
