SGE Menus

Your heads-up-display or HUD always visible while playing, even when docked at ports or in a biodome. It shows the vital status and holdings information needed to play the game.

Contents

Top - Ship Status

The top consists of 3 gauges - your shields (top-left), your energy (top-right), and your warp fuel (top-center). The shields and energy also show the maximum levels when the shields/energy is not full.

The in-game menus also appear at the top. Pressing ESC will bring up or remove the top menu bar.

Left Side - Hardware Bays

The Hardware bays display either 8 slots or 24 slots for the Garbage Barge. This can be minimized if desired.

Upper Right - Stats and Cargo Holds

There are five information fields in the upper right.

  • Current Location - both system name and coordinates (but not clickable for the chat window).
  • Title and Character Name
  • Experience and Reputation
  • Credits
  • Cargo holds - This can either display the number of holds carrying each resource type and/or colonists, or it can display the holds individually. Click on a cargo hold to switch modes.

Middle Right - Orders Menu

There are 6 orders menu items.

  • Go To Order - Turns on the autopilot.
  • Anchor Order - Your ship will attempt to not move from the current spot.
  • Enter Mode On/Off - Same as the END key. The icon lights up when Enter Mode is On.
  • Galaxy Map - Same as Alt-G.
  • Character Status - Same as Alt-P.
  • Hail Other Vessel - This icon blinks when you are being hailed.

Lower Right - Mini Radar

The radar area is used for four functions.

  • Radar - Shows planets, ports, ships, weapons, and floating resources. Use Alt-- and Alt-+ to zoom.
  • Galaxy Mini Map - Shows a small and simple version of the Alt-G full galaxy map window.
  • Portrait - Shows a picture of the person talking to you (via /t) when they first contact you.
  • In-System List - Lists all players and NPC's in your current system, port, planet, or dome.

The mini radar is not displayed when in port or in a colony.

Bottom - Chat Box

The Chat box is a customizable 2-way information screen used for game information and talking to others. It can be minimized, maximized, manually resized, and can either have a transparent or black background.

Controlling the HUD

Most of the elements of the HUD can be minimized. Use the /min command to minimize all but the top items and the mini window. Use /max to restore them to their full display. All minimizable elements can be individually minimized. Often some information is minimized while invading or during battle.

The game will remember what has been minimized when in space vs. what is minimized in port.
