That's a very accurate description of why I stopped playing. I played casually from 2004 to 2011.

Space fights made Starport popular and fun, IMHO. Building empires alone is tedious and boring - building in this game should only serve the purpose of creating something to fight over. It wasn't one specific patch, but an accumulation of changes over time (from about 2007 on) altered the simplicity and fun of space fights. The thrill and adrenaline during an epic space battle (or battling on a planet surface) just isn't there when building or invading mass empires alone - and that's what you end up doing with most of your time.

The games pretty dead compared to what it used to be and some mods interupt and drag on combat tediously, I've started playing again for the only thing i can really enjoy in the game nowadays, building.That's the only thing i'd recommend getting back in to it for nowadays.

A sidenote: Toonces re-edited my original post to "I've been wondering the same thing"..
