Rick Wright, the keyboardist and founding member of Pink Floyd, died yesterday at the age of 65 as a result of his battle with cancer.

“The family of Richard Wright, founding member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time,” said Wright’s spokesperson.


It is not yet known what form of cancer Wright suffered from.

Singer and guitarist of Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, had this to say about Wright’s passing on his website: “No one can replace Richard Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend. In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten. He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognized Pink Floyd sound.” He later adds, “Like Rick, I don't find it easy to express my feelings in words, but I loved him and will miss him enormously.”

While Wright may not have always been the center of attention in the band, he played a crucial part in developing the band’s signature sound. Along with playing the keyboards he also penned several Pink Floyd tracks, such as “Great Gig In The Sky” and “Us And Them” from the band’s famous “Dark Side Of The Moon” album.

The loss of Richard Wright is a big one for the music world and he will be greatly missed by us all.

A Floyd reunion is essentially impossible now, I can't see it honestly happening. Perhaps a tribute concert in a year or two, but for those like me wishing for a tour, it won't happen. But I hope I'm wrong.

A Floyd reunion is essentially impossible now, I can't see it honestly happening. Perhaps a tribute concert in a year or two, but for those like me wishing for a tour, it won't happen. But I hope I'm wrong.

It's mostly his voice, he'd usually do this dual harmonization thing with Gilmour, to create this almost ethereal singing, like you hear in Echoes, in this topic's clip. That's the worst loss to me, they can always find a keyboardist who can sound similar, but I'm not sold on someone that can pull off the unique vocal skills he had.

Seen this clips b4 but never tired of watchin probably the greatest band the world has ever seen. Echo's is a work of art and showed signs that the bands current line up was much more progessive and creative than during the Syd Barrett years. I've been into Pink Floyd for over 20 yrs. Unfortunately I never got to see this line up play together but I did see Dave Gilmour/Richard Wright/Nick Mason play Earls Court London in about 92-93 for the Division Bell tour. Although Gilmour's voice is smooth velvet and he was a more than accomplished guitarist , he couldnt write songs like Roger Waters and I think they we're a much weaker band without his egotisical presence. The two studio albums they made as a trio, A Momentry Lapse of Reason & Division Bell were shallow in comparision to the likes of The Wall, Wish You Were Here & Darkside Of The Moon. Even the ironically named Final Cut is superior.
I managed to see Roger Waters tour Ireland on 3 different occasions and the later one he performed D.S.O.M. in its entirity with the help of special guest Nick Mason on drums.
His solo album Amused To Death is probably my favourite album of all time.

I'm currently listening to Rory Gallagher alot right now. Rory accomlished major critical aclaim in Europe in the 70's for his dedication to the blues, his electricly charged live performances and decision to play in venues in Northern Ireland during the worst years of the terrorism. Sadly he died of MRSA from complications in a liver transplant. Jimi Hendrix was onced asked whats it like to best the worlds best guitarist? He replied to the interviewer. "You'll have to ask Rory Gallagher". Eric Clapton says Rory got him back into the blues.

Nah man, I used to back in the day but don't have the time anymore. Still like the folks here and try to remember to check in every once in a while and see what's new from time to time.

Caught Waters a second time earlier tonight. It's a great show if any of you get a chance. Just came back and put on Meddle and every time it makes me think of SGE, hope everybody's doing well

I have to disagree, Momentary Lapse Of Reason and Division Bell are just as great albums as The Wall, Darkside of the Moon, and Wish You Were Here. Don't forget the other great albums like Animals...The live albums, Delicate Sound Of Thunder and Pulse.

Roger Waters album The Final Cut is ok but to be is a Wall rip off and most of the songs are bitter much like his feeling at the time of his former band-mates in Pink Floyd. Still a good listen but no where near the combined creative level of Pink Floyd.


If you have listened to all of their albums since the first ones in the late 60's to now you will see how the music has evolved in style but every album is a work of art in my humble opinion. I saw Pink Floyd myself during the Division Bell tour and it still holds fond memories for me, nothing is better then that giant pig during the show and all the other goodies they did during the concert
