Family Guy

Post by BardockSGE » Wed Nov 25, 2009 8:27 am

The title gives away what this thread is generally about. This is a random thread from a bored Bardock. Have fun with this, try to keep flaming down.

The discussion, is Family Guy overrated. Why or why not.

My two cents in the pot: It can't be denied Family Guy has its moments of funnynesstypestuff. But I don't see why people think of it as this amazing untouchable cartoon. The biggest issue I have with Family Guy is the <This is a joke, we're family guy, meaning you laugh because we're family guy even if the joke was awful. We're family Guy. You laugh.> Personally, Simpsons kick the BBQ out of Family Guy hands down. Homer would beat Peter's donkey any day. Infact, they need to throw down. To wrap things up. Maybe Family Guy isn't my type of cartoon. Personally I don't like hard core pointed out funnynesstypestuff, as said before. I'm more of a type to see a friend of my slip and fall on his donkey and laugh my butt off.

I'd say roughly half the people I'd ask what their favorite cartoon is, most the time it is Family Guy. Why this cartoon is so popular is above me. Like I said before, it's a good cartoon, just not amazingly great or worth the credit it is given.

Family guy is funny for shock value and the way it blatently plajurises (not sure if spelt right) other shows and deals with current affairs and subjects that main stream tv wont...example being racism. I would agree that the Simpsons has more substance. Well it used to. To be fair the Simpsons has gone drastically down hill in the last few seasons, churning out the same old jokes. Family guy does this too but has more of a shock value to it. Also the fact that Family Guy is broadcast after the watershed gives them more freedom to take risks with their subject matter. I love both the shows but I had to root for one I'd go with Family Guy, only because its more adult orientated and because the Simpsons has declined in substance lately. If you had asked the question a few years ago I would have gone with the Simpsons.

simpsons = becoming increasingly time-wasting
family guy = still pretty epic
american dad = fail
cleveland show = WTF WAS FOX THINKING
south park = disturbingly awesome

I agree, Simpsons are going down... What the hell were they thinking when they made the Simpsons movie? I honestly was not impressed at all with it. I expected much more from the simpsons. And yes, Family Guy does have a great grip on their fans. They have a lot of freedom to attempt new stuff. But as said before, I just don't like the <This is a joke, laugh now.> vibe I get from Family Guy. Perhaps the reason I do like Simpsons more is for the characters. I like Homer and Marge much more than I do Peter and Louis.

But having said Simpsons are going down hill. How fresh is Family Guy honestly? I watch it every now and again but I usually don't catch the new episodes. Are they staying fresh? I don't know, tell me.

I feel family guy is consistently funny because they perfected the 'asides' that allow them to pretty much add in any funny joke they can illustrate and it makes sense in the story - no matter how outrageous.
