Wow, I checked and double-checked that calculus problem and there were no mistakes. Very nice mind-duck.

Jwilson is right about it not being calculus. The fact that it is wrong is untrue. Every step is true. Using a few different mathematical properties, you can see that all steps are correct. I will go through each one.
  • 1: Since a == b, then a*a = a*b.
  • 2: Since you are subtracting b^2 from both sides, this is correct.
  • 3: All that has happened is that they have been factored.
  • 4: Divide (a-b) from both sides. This leaves (a+b) = b.
  • 5: Since a == b, then b == a so this works.
  • 6: a + a == 2a and a == a. This means that 2a == a.

Now, using a positive, a negative, and a non-positive/negative number in this.
  • Given: 0 = 0
  • 1: 0^2 = 0*0
  • 2: 0^2-0^2 = 0*0-0^2
  • 3: (0 - 0)(0 + 0) = 0(0 - 0)
  • 4: (0 + 0) = 0
  • 5: xxxxx

Actually, you know what? It is wrong. You cannot divide by zero as this would make the entirety of the statement untrue (or at least undefined/infinity). That is why it is wrong. Jwilson is right^^.

Since when did basic algebra get mistaken for calculus?

People are stupid xD. I already said that jwil was right. I had skimmed through it before and the idea was fine until you actually started plugging in numbers. Also, 10/3 = 3.333^^.

It's better to plug in something other than zero for a/b.
  • Given: 5 = 5
  • 1: 5^2 = 5*5 = 25
  • 2: 5^2-5^2 = 5*5-5^2 = 0
  • 3: (5 - 5)(5 + 5) = 5(5 - 5) = 0
Now divide by zero(a - b) and you get...
  • 4: (5 + 5) = 5
  • 5: Dividing by zero: Not calculus, just wrong
[/color]

I didn't plug in zero xD. And I said that Jwilson was right that it wasn't calculus at the beginning of my post. And yes, that is what I meant, anything minus itself == 0 which means that it is wrong.

0.99999999999999999... = 1

a = 0.999...
10a = 9.999...
10a - a = 9
9a = 9
a = 1
0.999... = 1

That has no mathematical basis. At all... To begin with, .9999... =/= 1. a is .999... in your problem as well... all you did was round and randomly just defy any law that posed a problem for you xD.

I'm sorry, but 0.99999... (9s until infinity) really IS 1.

1/9 = 0.11111....
9*(1/9) = 9*(0.1111....)
1 = 0.9999....

same theorem, different proof :p

Great thing about math, you can make what ever you want, no matter how contradictory it may be, and just call it a theorem.

Contradictory? There's nothing contradictory about 0.999.. (9 to infinity) being equal to 1.
