Jwilson is right about it not being calculus. The fact that it is wrong is untrue. Every step is true. Using a few different mathematical properties, you can see that all steps are correct. I will go through each one.
Now, using a positive, a negative, and a non-positive/negative number in this.
Actually, you know what? It is wrong. You cannot divide by zero as this would make the entirety of the statement untrue (or at least undefined/infinity). That is why it is wrong. Jwilson is right^^.
- 1: Since a == b, then a*a = a*b.
- 2: Since you are subtracting b^2 from both sides, this is correct.
- 3: All that has happened is that they have been factored.
- 4: Divide (a-b) from both sides. This leaves (a+b) = b.
- 5: Since a == b, then b == a so this works.
- 6: a + a == 2a and a == a. This means that 2a == a.
