I think it is pretty incredible he released his album for free. He isn't signed to any label though he's had offers from jay-z, young money, and p-diddy yet still sold 300k records self-promoting with no commercial radio plays.

he turned down big fast money to control his career and lyrics.

I think this is a true American hero.
