Random Astronomy facts in-game

Post by rebjorn » Thu Feb 09, 2012 12:43 pm

I was thinking .. people spend a lot of time afking around in-game. What if we could have some random facts thrown in while we go about our daily business. I'm thinking optional via a check box in options for those who aren't that interested. The facts could for example roll across the open space between Tells and the Minimize button in the chat box.

Gathering this info could be tedious for just 1 person, but I would happily volunteer to help find things to add - and if more wouldn't mind doing the same, we could have quite a database in a short time - even with people just helping out with it now and then on a random basis.

Some examples:

Code: Select all

The Speed of Light in Vacuum is 299,792,458 Meters or 186,282 miles per second.

Code: Select all

If the Red Giant Betelgeuse in the Orion Nebula swapped places with our Sun, its surface would extend out into our Solar System all the way out to Jupiter.

Code: Select all

There are an estimated 125-500 billion Galaxies in the known Universe. This number increases as technology is improved.

Code: Select all

The Milky Way is itself traveling at a pace of 552 to 630 KM/S, meaning we humans also travel at least that fast at any time.
We could all be sitting there one day with a lot of knowledge about astronomy as a result. Even with small text and facts popping up every 5 minutes, our minds will register it. It wouldn't have to work exactly as i described of course. It'd be another reason to keep playing - it's even educative! Don't get me wrong, I'm learning things here already but.. ya. What do you think?
