Idea for Newbs

Make character recreate credits, and give new players one. OR, (and I like the first idea better) ... give stats info at the character creation screen. And more than what's in starpedia. Something that lets newbies know that unless they're on pax or blitz, they should have max dex.

I really like the first idea better though. With the first idea, newbs have a chance to experience the game and learn about stats and see what other people have. And if they get into the game, their activity will likely garner the attention of another active player (who isn't a newb), who can tell them about their free character re-create credit.

Thoughts?

Perfect idea. Newbs always put 5,5,5 or put 10 wisdom cause they wanna be some wizard or something. They dont know what it does. Hell, I didn't figure out what wisdom did until I finally asked someone prolly a week after I started playing. I ended up quiting my first perma because my stats were messed up and I couldn't compete with people that had 10 dexterity. I couldn't invade efficiently or defend myself from fights. It is essential that you are to explain the attributes before people use them, probably give a 'helpful hint' "Most every player chooses 10 dexterity to invade colonies and fight back in attacks from other players, it is HIGHLY recommended that you choose 10 dexterity."

Incorrect, CHANGE THE DEFAULT SETTING TO 10 DEX AND 5 CHARISMA (the most used) AND GIVE A WARNING NOTICE IF THE PLAYER ATTEMPTS TO LOWER DEXTERITY

warning message could be mel's suggested notice, something along the lines of "it is highly recommended you keep 10 dexterity"

update! i talked to toonces about this in-game, to insure he knew about it. of course he didnt.

he was surprised to learn that dex is important 0.o which i find strange, since he almost always has max dex everywhere. and i think it's hard not to notice that all top players have max dex... even if you dont play the game.

anyway, i explained how crucial dex is. and how discouraging it is to newbies who inevitably choose the wrong stats. and of course, toonces got the wrong idea from my information: equalize the value of wisdom, dex, and charisma.

this is so not what i meant at all. i guess increasing the effects of wisdom and charisma would be fine, but i told him that dex would always be more valuable than the other two, because high dex is essential to being a good/decent invader, fighter... and runner. and there arent a lot of cases of top players not doing any of those things. being able to defend(with fighting) and retaking your colonies is almost always a necessity in order to move up in the sge world.

toonces seemed to like the free chara recreate credit option, so hopefully he'll patch that in. and my attempt to keep newbies from quitting wont turn into a huge stats mess o.o
